Homework Help: Pump output

  1. Aug 29, 2005 #1
    The cylinder of a pump has a 6 inch diameter. The stroke is 8 inches in length with 200 strokes per minute. Find the output of the pump in gallons per minute.

    Output in gal/min = cylinder volume (in gals.) * number of strokes per min.

    As a followup to EnumaElish's reply.. Are you in good shape finding the volume of the cylinder?http://www.mathleague.com/help/geometry/3space.htm#cylinder [Broken]
    The question states the diameter, all you need is the length (which is implied in the problem description)

    check my answer

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    :smile: undefined

    Can yourself EnumaElish check my answer?

    v = pi * r^2 * h
    = (3.140) * (3^2) * (8)
    = 226 cubic inches in each stroke

    Total = 226 cubic inches x 200 strokes = 45,200 cubic inches

    convert cubic inches to gallons ; 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches

    45,200 cubic inches
    ------------------
    231 cubic inches

    = 196 gallons

    Is this correct? Please post.

    It looks right to me, with the minor edit that it's 196 gals. per minute. Anyone else care to comment?

    Correct, provided 200 is the no.of discharge strokes per minute, otherwise half the flowrate.
