Looking at the polynomial question, the poly x-i is odd degree and has no real solutions. Moral of the story: write all of the conditions of the question out properly. Note, for instance, that as stated you original question omits some very important information about the domain of the function f. It is prefectly possible to have continuous functions that take only rational values and are not constant if you choose the domain properly.
