I saw her standing there with a doo-dad in her hair (I don't know the writer(s) nor the performer(s))

I saw her standing there
with a doo-dad in her hair
and I guess she didn't care
so much for me.
For she said that she was wed,
and I wish that I was dead.
But the chances are I'll live 'til 93.

Always brings a tear to my eye.

All right all you closet Emos, what are some of your favorite sad songs?

When I found out that this song was about a dog that drowned, it really made me sad.

 This song sounds likes something from a Chevy Chase movie.

But I love the Jim Reeves "Blizzard" song, and Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven", and REM's "Everybody Hurts", and "Damaged".

Probably one you haven't heard before. "Utah Carol", found this version on youtube.
Here's the original Marty Robbins version. He songs always have such stupid stories, but they're still irresistible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apq8EDzflPI

And, the funniest Marty Robbins song of all time. Huh,
"I never fight till the sun's going down
And my back is facing the West"

Like that's really gonna work.

Song That Can You Cry

The odd thing about sad songs is that they can be happy songs as well. That song that meant everything good with the old girlfriend can make you cry with the opening notes today.
Sometimes that sad song can indicate an upcoming hope, or desire to to climb out of that sad situation. I've always believed that without the sad stuff, we'd never appreciate the good stuff.
Everything ever created by man has been made so by some driven need he didn't have.
Or, to impress a girl.
It's always about something that he doesn't have, and has to work to achieve. Sad songs are the stuff that fuel our dreams to become reality.

Personally, I don't cry because of songs. For me, it's movies. Specifically Christmas movies. I've cried at the end of every version of "A Christmas Carol" I ever saw, including Bill Murray's "Scrooged".
And, <snif> The Nightmare Before Christmas.
<ulp> Yeah, even 2003's Elf.

* note for the ladies - If you didn't feel "included" with the above, please understand that it was in no way meant to be sexist. Feel free to exchange all masculine refrences above to the feminine equivilent. (boy=girl, etc).
Also, I'd like my non-Christian friends and visitors to know that my personal teariness about Christmas movies ("Holiday movies", as you call them) is not to be taken as any attack or affront to your personal faith or religion, or lack thereof.

I've always liked this Stevie Wonder tune. But I never considered it to be a "sad song" until I listened to the lyrics.

Beach Boys - Warmth of the Sun

A song about Carl's Irish Setter - Shannon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70psCljGnXM

What good is the dawn
That grows into day
The sunset at night
Or living this way

For I have the warmth of the sun
(Warmth of the sun)
Within me at night
(Within me at night)

The love of my life
She left me one day
I cried when she said
"I don't feel the same way"
As she swam out to sea

Still I have the warmth of the sun
(Warmth of the sun)
Within me tonight
(Within me tonight)

I'll dream of her paws
And though they're not real
It's like she's still there
The way that I feel

My love's like the warmth of the sun
(Warmth of the sun)
It won't ever die
(It won't ever die)

OK so I am an old geezer. This is Karen Carpenter dubbed over a young Japanese romance. The young man is leaving to become a priest.

It's kind of old fashioned, but "I won't send roses" from the musical Mack and Mabel always makes me tear up a little:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuFIzHifuu4&feature=related

I won't send roses
Or hold the door
I won't remember
Which dress you wore

My heart is too much in control
The lack of romance in my soul
Will turn you grey, kid
So stay away, kid

Forget my shoulder
When you're in need
Forgetting birthdays
Is guaranteed

And should I love you, you would be
The last to know
I won't send roses
And roses suit you so

WOW that was great. I'll take the old fashioned. Back in the "day" a lot of good music came out of plays and movies.

Kidding aside, I found the story about that song pretty interesting.

Just so you don't miss the connection, http://www.henrygross.com/bio.htm [Broken]. (You have to scroll down a bit to get to the story of Shannon)

This song always makes me cry - especially this part:

"Between the parted pages
And were pressed between love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHS8hj4TdT8

Incredibly, MIH is in this video. You can see by the colored chairs laughing at the guy doing exercises.

Something I find disturbing, yet sad, is Heirate Mich by Rammstein. The general basis of the song is horrible, but when you think about the lyrics it's quite sad, a man losing the love of his life (who also rejected him) and slowly being driven insane from the loss. It also seems to say that he's the only one who even cares she's dead anymore (as I see it).

I won't post the lyrics here, quite inappropriate for a forum. Like I said it's disturbing, yet sad.

Found it....it's by Westlife and it's called I'm already there. I did not listen to all of it tho. I turned it off at the sunshine in the hair part because I did not feel like being emo -_-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx4RsCfL_fA", Sarah's studio version for me, melancholy for the lone traveller far from home.

As McLachlan explained on VH1 Storytellers, the song is about the Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin, who overdosed on heroin and died in 1996. McLachlan explained that there's nothing constant when you are on the road; everything becomes the same.
Lyrics said:
Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There’s always one reason
To feel not good enough
And it’s hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memory seeps from my veins
Let me be empty
And weightless and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there

So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There’s vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lie
That you make up for all that you lack
It don’t make no difference
Escaping one last time
It’s easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
This glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
