Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Yep, +1. After knowing Clapton's story and becoming a father, stops me cold.

Two 1960s tunes:
Who, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9-3RZkzpwM" (pg 444), about a wounded Vietnam Vet returning home, and it fit.

No one knows what it's like To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

Beatles, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeQGKqDfdU0"
Because its beautiful, because its a goodbye to the 60s, and a goodbye to the Beatles.

1860s

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30bDcvDqBXY"l, theme for Ken Burn's The Civil War. Song was actually composed in the 20th century, but after Burn's documentary for me it became one and the same with the passing away of early America.

Oh, why you look so sad?
The tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now

Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
'Cause I've seen the dark side too

When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
I won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

So, if you're mad, get mad!
Don't hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now

Hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too
Well I'm a lot like you

When you're standing at the crossroads
And don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
'Cause even if you're wrong

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
I won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

Take me in into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you

And when, when the night falls on you baby
You're feeling all alone
You won't be on your own

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
I won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

Take me in into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
Oh, I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you

As for sad songs, Emiliana Torrini's Gollum song at the end of the Two Towers is my choice:

And another one is "Ue wo muite arukou" by Sakamoto.
Don't let the light tunes deceive you, here's the lyrics about a love gone forever:
I look up when I walk
So the tears won’t fall
Remembering those happy spring days
But tonight I’m all alone
I look up when I walk
Counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those happy summer days
But tonight I’m all alone
Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies above the sky
I look up when I walk
So the tears won’t fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I’m all alone

Remembering those happy autumn days
But tonight I’m all alone
Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
I look up when I walk
So the tears won’t fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I’m all alone

You can have this heart to break by Billy Joel. My theme song.

Billy Joel

And So It Goes

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense

And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows.

Billy Joel

Yep, great one from the Piano Man Evo. From the lyrics I always assumed that the song was about saying goodbye to a spouse, but I don't quite connect the dates. So it Goes washttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_So_It_Goes" [Broken], though not released until '90. Joel divorced Elizabeth Small in '82, married Brinkley in '85, divorced her in '94. So best guess is the song was a late goodbye to Small.

Who By Fire - Leonard Cohen.

You hear it in the background in malls, etc, often - sounds like a light ditty. Never paid much attention to it, then heard it recently very clear and close up, giving me a new perspective. Had one of those musical chill moments ..

"Who shall I say id calling" ?, ie, (IMO) what death is approaching you, or what death do you choose.

And who by fire,
who by water,
who in the sunshine,
who in the night time,
who by high ordeal,
who by common trial,
who in your merry merry month of may,
who by very slow decay
and who shall I say is calling?

And who in her lonely slip,
who by barbiturate,
who in these realms of love,
who by something blunt,
and who by avalanche,
who by powder,
who for his greed,
who for his hunger,
and who shall I say is calling?

And who by brave assent,
who by accident,
who in solitude,
who in this mirror,
who by his lady's command,
who by his own hand,
who in mortal chains,
who in power,
and who shall I say is calling?
-- Leonard Cohen
