Troubleshooting Screen Door Closure: Tips and Tricks | Greetings

In summary, the conversation discusses an issue with a newly installed screen door where it does not close properly when the main entry door is shut before the screen door. However, it closes perfectly when the main door is open or when the screen glass is moved to expose some of the screen. This is due to trapped air between the doors, which slows the closing of the screen door and prevents it from activating the latch mechanism.

Greetings
I just installed a screen door. With the glass in the screen, I noticed that if I close the main entry door prior to the screen door being shut, the screen door will not close all the way and hit the latch.

If I try to close the screen door with the main door open the screen closes perfectly.

Yet, when I move the screen glass to expose some of the screen, the screen door closes perfectly.
Can someone explain what is going on

thanks

Sounds like the fit between the screen door and frame is nice and tight. You are trapping air between the door and screen door (perhaps storm door is closer). The trapped air slows the closing of the screen door so it does not have sufficient speed to activate the latch mechanism. If the door or screen door is open the air escapes fast enough that the screen door closes fast enough to get past the latch.

for reaching out for help with your screen door closure issue. It sounds like there may be some interference between the screen door and the main entry door when they are both closed. This could be caused by a few different things such as the hinges being misaligned, the latch not being properly adjusted, or the frame of the screen door being slightly warped.

One troubleshooting tip you can try is to check the alignment of the hinges on the screen door. They should be evenly spaced and securely attached to the frame. If they appear to be loose or crooked, you may need to readjust them to ensure a proper fit. Additionally, you can also try adjusting the latch on the screen door to see if that helps with the closure.

If the issue persists, it may be helpful to have a professional come and take a look at the screen door to determine the exact cause of the problem. They will have the expertise and tools necessary to make any necessary repairs or adjustments to ensure your screen door closes smoothly and securely.

I hope these tips and tricks help you troubleshoot and resolve your screen door closure issue. Best of luck!

1. How can I fix a screen door that won't close properly?

There are a few potential causes for a screen door that won't close properly. First, check if the hinges are loose and tighten them if needed. If the hinges are fine, the issue may be with the door frame being out of alignment. Try adjusting the frame or using shims to realign it. If those solutions don't work, check the door handle and latch to make sure they are functioning properly.

2. Why does my screen door slam shut instead of closing gently?

This is usually due to a broken or worn-out door closer. The door closer is the mechanism that controls the speed and force of the door closing. Check if the door closer needs to be adjusted or replaced.

3. How can I make my screen door easier to open and close?

If your screen door is difficult to open and close, it may be due to dirt and debris clogging the tracks and wheels. Clean out the tracks and lubricate the wheels to improve the door's movement. You can also adjust the spring tension on the door closer to make it easier to open and close.

4. What should I do if my screen door sticks or drags along the ground?

If your screen door is sticking or dragging, it's likely because the door frame is not level. Use a level to check the frame and adjust it if needed. You can also try lubricating the wheels and tracks or adjusting the door closer to see if that helps.

5. How often should I maintain my screen door to prevent closure issues?

It's a good idea to inspect and maintain your screen door at least once a year to prevent closure issues. This can include cleaning and lubricating the tracks and wheels, checking for loose hinges or screws, and adjusting the door closer if needed. Regular maintenance can help prolong the life of your screen door and prevent common closure problems.
