Calculating Shear Stress in a Steel Drum

In summary, the steel drum contains oil with a density of 0.712 and is standing on one of its ends. It has a diameter of 66cm and a height of 1.98m. The plate it is rolled from is 1.2mm thick and has an E=200GPa and an ultimate strength of 510MPa. To calculate the shear stress, the volume of the drum needs to be calculated and further calculations need to be made. The factor of safety can also be determined using the ultimate strength and the calculated shear stress.

Hi Tiny Tim,
I've calculated the volume in the drum and I don't know where to go from there to calculate the shear stress.
Thanks,
Matt

1. What is shear stress in a steel drum?

Shear stress in a steel drum refers to the force per unit area that is applied parallel to the surface of the drum, causing it to deform or break. It is a measure of the internal resistance of the drum to shear forces.

2. How is shear stress calculated in a steel drum?

Shear stress in a steel drum is calculated by dividing the applied force by the cross-sectional area of the drum. The resulting units are typically in pounds per square inch (psi) or newtons per square meter (Pa).

3. What factors affect the shear stress of a steel drum?

The shear stress of a steel drum can be affected by various factors, including the material properties of the steel, the shape and size of the drum, the applied force, and the temperature of the drum.

4. How does shear stress impact the durability of a steel drum?

Shear stress can significantly impact the durability of a steel drum. High levels of shear stress can cause the drum to deform, crack, or fail, making it more susceptible to damage and reducing its lifespan.

5. How can the shear stress of a steel drum be controlled?

The shear stress of a steel drum can be controlled by selecting a suitable material with high resistance to shear forces, designing the drum with appropriate dimensions and reinforcement, and ensuring that the applied force does not exceed the drum's capacity.
