Alexander Kielland, very famous in Norway.
He lived in Ibsen's time, and is one of the "Great Four" of that time
(The other two were Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Jonas Lie)

Kjell Askildsen is a highly acclaimed present day writer of short stories.

How about Dante (Italian), Virgil (Roman), or Homer (Greek)? C'mon, these are too easy.

Don't forget about Antonin Pavlovich Chekhov, one of the fathers of the contemporary short story.
