Skimming a stone across a lake

In summary, the conversation discusses whether a flat stone will go further on a calm, flat water surface or on a surface covered with waves. It is suggested that the stone may go further on a wavy surface due to reduced contact time with the water, but the waves do not contribute any momentum to the stone. The conversation also mentions a related article about researchers studying skimming stones and the use of this technique in WWII.

If I skim a flat stone across a lake will it go further on a calm, flat, water surface or on a surface covered with waves i.e can the pebble pick up momentum from the waves if it travels at the right speed and trajectory?

May be in the wavy water, the stone can go further. But it is not because the pebble picks up momentum from the wave. In fact it reduces the time the pebble contacts with water. The waves do not contribute any momentum to the stone in horizontal direction.

The researchers on that link have really done some work on skimming stones!

What is skimming a stone across a lake?

Skimming a stone across a lake is a simple yet fun activity where you throw a flat, smooth stone at a low angle across the surface of a body of water, causing it to bounce multiple times before sinking.

What are the benefits of skimming a stone across a lake?

Skimming a stone across a lake can improve hand-eye coordination, concentration, and motor skills. It also provides a fun and relaxing outdoor activity.

What is the best type of stone to use for skimming?

The best type of stone for skimming is a flat, smooth, and round stone. This type of stone will glide more smoothly across the water and create more bounces.

How do you achieve the most bounces while skimming a stone?

To achieve the most bounces while skimming a stone, you should throw the stone at a low angle and with a flick of your wrist. A smooth and consistent motion is key to creating bounces.

Are there any safety precautions to keep in mind while skimming a stone?

Yes, it is important to be cautious of other people or objects in the area and to only skim stones in designated areas. It is also recommended to wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from potential injuries.
