Homework Help: Solving for the Force/Area of three charged sheets

  1. Feb 15, 2010 #1
    1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data
    Three large but thin charged sheets are parallel to each other as shown in the figure . Sheet I has a total surface charge density of 8.0 nC/m^2, sheet II a charge of -3.1 nC/m^2, and sheet III a charge of 5.1 nC/m^2.

    Figure:

    ----------------(I)
    ----------------(II)

    ----------------(III)

    Estimate the magnitude of the force per unit area on sheet I, II, and III, N/m^2

    2. Relevant equations
    E= o/2Eo ( for one charged plate)
    o= q/A so q = oA
    F/A = Eq/A = Eq = o^2/2Eo = o/Eo

    3. The attempt at a solution

    F/A = (EIII - EII)oI = { (oIII-oII) /Eo } oI
