Some avatars

I've noticed that some folks here have avatar images even though they don't have any recognitions. How have they got the avatars? I though that you need to contribute or get some other recognitions for avatars.

You will usually notice that those people have been around a long time. Members that had avatars before we changed the format here to contributors and members that have been awarded ribbons were able to keep the avatars, but they cannot change their avatar, if they try, they will lose it. Also, if they were previously a contributor, they can keep their avatar unless they try to change it.
