There is an open source SPH code called Gadget that is great for simulating mergers of objects. It is Newtonian, so doesn't have General Relativity, so it won't be very accurate for neutron stars, but it's great for simulating stars and galaxies. It runs on a laptop, but is parallelizable, so if you have a compute cluster you can simulate some really large structures.
