Sports distances covered

  1. Aug 25, 2012 #1
How are distances covered, medium speeds of players etc measured in sports matches? I know the system has on its basis a network of cameras that cover the hole field, but:
    How is movement tracked?
    How are players distinguished?
    Thank you
    Regards

I thought it was done mostly the old fashioned way, with your eye. (And some cameras)

I've never seen a sporting event besides a race where players' speeds were measured. In races, its easy: you just have a timer that starts when the gun goes off and shuts off when they reach the finish. This can all be done pretty easily with electronics.

This is done in football/soccer for example
