Stress in a long wire...

Homework Statement

When we talk about stress we say stress= F/A now this force is same throughout the long wire right? and is equal to the tension? or else the string breaks...Here we assume the string to be massless...

Now if the string has some mass...then isn't the stress different at different points...It decreses as you go down the string...isnt it?

Yes, the stress in a long wire will decrease as you go down the wire. This is because the tension in the wire decreases due to the added mass of the wire. The force is still the same, but the area over which it is distributed decreases, so the stress decreases.

What is stress in a long wire?

Stress in a long wire refers to the internal force or pressure that is exerted on the wire when it is stretched or compressed.

What causes stress in a long wire?

Stress in a long wire can be caused by external forces acting on the wire, such as weight or tension, or by internal forces, such as thermal expansion or contraction.

How is stress in a long wire measured?

Stress in a long wire is typically measured in units of force per unit area, such as pounds per square inch (psi) or newtons per square meter (N/m²).

What are the effects of stress on a long wire?

High levels of stress in a long wire can cause it to deform, break, or fail. It can also affect the wire's electrical conductivity and overall performance.

How can stress in a long wire be reduced?

Stress in a long wire can be reduced by using thicker wires, adding support structures, or applying coatings or treatments that can help distribute the stress more evenly.
