In summary, there have been recent settlements out of court regarding the division of profits from "Lord of the Rings," but there are still ongoing disagreements, particularly regarding DVD sales. Director Peter Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh feel they have not received their fair share. Although the sums involved are exorbitant, it is important to recognize their right to have their contract fulfilled. The vast difference in earnings between individuals is concerning, but ultimately, everyone should receive what they are owed.

Some of the squabbles over how the immense profits from the "Lord of the Rings" are to be divided, have now been settled out of court, according to this article:

Still, a lot of quarrels remain; in particular, Peter Jackson&Fran Walsh think they have been short-thrifted on DVD-sales.

Yes, it's hard to get by when you're the highest-paid director of all time. You need all the extra cash you can get.

Jackson close to 100 million dollars settlement?

I know, we can all agree that the figures we're dealing with are insane, and that either one of us could happily have settled for the 200 million dollars or so Peter Jackson already has earned on his master-piece.

But:
Even though these figures are hallucinatory and in quite a different order of magnitude than most PF'ers paychecks, shouldn't we still recognize P.J,.'s right to have the contract signed with New Line actually fulfilled?

I guess they should get what they are owed, but it's disturbing that some people can earn so much more than others.

"The Lord of the Rings: Zaentz gets 168 million dollars" refers to a legal battle over the film and merchandise rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's popular fantasy novel, "The Lord of the Rings". The battle was between producer Saul Zaentz and Tolkien's estate, with Zaentz ultimately receiving a settlement of 168 million dollars.

Why did the legal battle occur?

The legal battle occurred due to a dispute over the interpretation of the original contract between Tolkien and Zaentz. The contract gave Zaentz the rights to create a live-action film based on the novel, but did not specifically mention merchandise rights. The Tolkien estate argued that the contract did not include merchandise rights, while Zaentz claimed that it did.

What was the outcome of the legal battle?
