Mel Gibson Fiasco: Shocking Audio & Movie Legacy

In summary, the new audio of Mel Gibson shows him to be a racist and abusive. His girlfriend is complicit in these behaviors and it's not clear if they are legal.

It's very tempting to put the blame on her because it seems as though she planned it.

My bet is that she did plan the recording & that is why she is calm.

However, don't you think there is a reason for doing so?

She has obviously been putting up with his shenanigans for quite some time & felt it was
finally time to record his mysoginistic hate-rants to show the world she had good
reason to leave him.

If you know anything about Mel Gibson you'll remember all of the homophobic, anti-semetic
comments he has espoused throughout his illustrious career. There's the whole issue
of the Passion of the Christ & the age old slander of conspiratorial Jewish puppet-master rule.

I think the onus is on the proven-anti semetic mysoginist & not his girlfriend to show
the world who is the one at fault in this debacle

Here's what Mel should have said:

"There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give me your pump, the oil, the gasoline, and the whole compound, and I'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror."

Instead of going to court maybe they can just settle things in the Thunder Dome like two post-apocalyptic civilized people.

He should have said BLOW ME! Oh right, he did.

The onus is on the public for thinking they have any right to judge either of them based on an incomplete/edited private recording sans context.

why should I care if someone says cool person or I hate Jews? Why should anyone care.

When you become a celebrity, what you do and say becomes news. Many people hold celebrities in high regard for absolutely no reason, so when a celebrity shows hatred for a person or group of people, it's not surprising that people are taken back by it.

Why should anyone care?

Because both terms are usually used out of ignorance.

And ignorant people are the ones to fear the most.

Nobody asked you to care

The only reason I bothered responding to this thread is because it seems as though everyone
is blaming the victim - namely his girlfriend.

It might seem suspect to people who've never put up with abusive people in the extreme
way we've seen this situation unfold but I thoroughally dislike people criticizing her
just because she taped that fool saying hateful things that he already has a track record of doing.

That kind of practice is very similar to the way in which women who were raped are
judged as suspect & tarnishing someone's good name,
something looks out of the ordinary & you leap at the victim most harshly...
Examples of this are Ireland where rapists in court have the whole town
shaking the rapists hand after court & practically driving the raped woman out of the town.

I'd advise people to think twice before they judge the one who had to put up with the
nonsense you've heard & read about, at least until some evidence against her surfaces...

Because we strive to be more than wild animals? Because civilized people have certain expectations for decency? Because good people reject this sort of behavior based on principle?

You don't have to. But we happen to enjoy saying "Ha ha ha, look, that celebrity is stupid and insane!"

I'd advise you to think twice before labeling an entire country as passive to sex crimes. And this is nothing like a rape allegation. It's a private spat that we shouldn't have heard about in the first place.

  • #47
What country did I label as passively observing sex crimes?

The point I was making, which you undoubtedly understood, was that you shouldn't
judge the victim when the only evidence you have is that she was unusually
quiet & that she taped the guy's hate-spasm.

If you listen to the thing it's patently clear he's a mysoginist talking about her dressed as a
vegas whore (or whatever he said) and that "he won't allow it".

No one has to put up with anything. Although Gibson was out of control, I tend to believe that his accusations of pumping millions into her failed career are probably based on truth. Sounds like the typical case of an old fool being taken by a young leech. I don't feel either of them are blameless.

Don't judge the victim, but the accused is fair game?

Last time I checked, animals (wild or domesticated) can't speak. You don't hear monkeys telling each other to go **** themselves. An old man yelling at someone for leeching off of him seems pretty decent to me. Find an old person who doesn't use "racist" language. Show me someone who has never got into a heated argument with a close one, and I will show you someone with no family or friends.

Ah, so you're dead set on condemning her.

Even if Gibson did pour money into her career, how does that reflect on his abusive
comments & him demanding her to stop dressing like a vegas slut because
he won't allow it & him claiming she's ruining his life etc... etc...?

The man had every opportunity to leave, especially if he was acting as her sugar daddy he
would have had double the power to leave her.

Nobody said she was blameless, there's simply no way she could be blameless.
However, if you think about the psychology of an abuser they are the one who is going
to drag you down to their depths & if we're going to believe that he was funnelling money
to her trying to build up her career that's only more evidence that he was striving for a
position of power & dominance in oder to control her life & take his anger out on her.

So; he was trying to control how she dressed,
paying millions to control her mode of living (acting),
says that he is her only friend on tape,
threatens her NOT to hang up or else...

At least 4 modes of exerting power & dominance on the tramp who is on his leash, yet she is the one who we should mistrust because she chose to tape this craziness to show the world that the already proven anti-semite homophobe is back to his old ways.

So, KalamMekhar, what would we have if stars and celebrities publicly surrendered to their emotions and self-control? How about Miley Cyrus swearing up a storm in front of the kiddies at one of her concerts? Or Oprah Winfrey shooting down whities for transgressions against her? Or President Obama giving Tea Partiers a four-finger salute? What impression will this instill in our youngest generations and what direction will their attitudes go before entering their teens? Is this the Disney World vacation you would like to spend with your family?

Miley Cyrus has already done that (see her EU tour). Oprah does it all the time. Obama gave the finger to everyone but his homies. It is the parents job to teach their kids how to behave, not someone on the movie screen.

No, I said neither of them is blameless. Both of them could have left. And there is no telling what she was like behind closed doors.

Yes, parents need to teach their kids how to behave. But one has little to do with the other.

So. With what you've provided here, it's now okay for a celebrity to spew out the N word and other hateful speech publicly? Parent's job is to say, "Don't do what the actor in the movie I took you to see did." Are you serious?

Parents choice to bring their child to a movie. I grew up hearing bad words, and watching people do bad things, my parents just told me that that is not the right way to live my life, and I am a respectable adult now.

I didn't go see Rambo, and then go home and shoot a bunch of people, so why should it be any different with language.

  • #62
I agree. You can't always be there when bad inflences are around, and trying to eliminate all of them isn't possible.

Wouldn't it be better to teach your kids the fundamentals of critical thinking and decision making ratherthan try to micromanage the world to be a giant baby cushion?

"Parents choice to bring their child to a movie." --That's not what I wrote and that's not what I'm talking about. So let's start back with clarifying your position: Do you think it's acceptable for a celebrity to spew out hate speech in public (particularly in front of one's child)?

There is a famous quote attributed to Martin Niemöller and found in various forms on the net. Here is a typical example:

Martin Niemöller said:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Regardless of how you feel you have to admire Mel's ability to stay angry through the whole thing. He doesn't let up one bit, get tired, or grow apathetic, he's got stamina!

He really seems like a fairly common abusive type, with the interesting addition of being a bigot and famous. Beyond that, he doesn't strike me as falling to far from the tree of his father.
