Thermal Physics and Probabilities

I'm currently taking an advanced undergrad (3rd year) course in thermal physics, and I can tell I'm going to need a much better understanding of probability and statistics in order to grasp the material. We are using the book "Thermal Physics" by Kittel and Kroemer, and I don't really enjoy it. My professor even says he doesn't like the book, so I wonder why we are using it. Can anyone recommend a good book on thermal physics and/or a good book on the type of probability and statistics that are used in this area?
