Transformers running with gain

In summary, the conversation discusses the possibility of coil setups for transformers that can run with gain and whether there are any effects similar to coupled inductors for CB radio antennas. It is mentioned that two out of tune AC transformers can create big voltage spikes, but it is clarified that transformers can only have voltage or current gain, not power gain.

Hello,

Are there any coil setups for transformers that when tuned or combined in weird ways run with gain? I heard that coupled inductors for CB radio antennas do this, but are there any effects similer to this for transformers? I heard an account from someone who said that two out of tune AC transformers tended to create big voltage spikes sometimes as the frequencies collided and created a lot of hash.

Thanks,
Jason O

Gain of what?

Any step-up transformer has voltage gain at the expense of current. Any step-down transformer has current gain at the expense of voltage. Also, both cases have loss as nothing is 100% efficient. NO transformer EVER has power gain.

1. What is the concept of "Transformers running with gain"?

"Transformers running with gain" refers to the process of increasing the output power of a transformer by adding an external circuit, such as a capacitor or inductor, to the secondary winding of the transformer.

2. How does running a transformer with gain affect its performance?

Running a transformer with gain can improve its efficiency and power handling capabilities. It can also change the frequency response and impedance characteristics of the transformer.

3. What are the benefits of running a transformer with gain?

Running a transformer with gain can allow for increased power output without having to physically increase the size or number of windings in the transformer. It can also help to reduce power losses and improve overall efficiency.

4. Are there any drawbacks to running a transformer with gain?

One potential drawback of running a transformer with gain is that it can introduce additional complexity and cost to the overall system. It may also require careful design and tuning to ensure optimal performance.

5. What are some common applications of running transformers with gain?

Transformers running with gain are commonly used in power supply circuits, audio amplifiers, and other electronic systems where efficient power transfer is important. They are also used in radio frequency applications to improve signal strength and bandwidth.
