In summary, the person is a senior in high school and has been accepted to several colleges for mechanical engineering and physics. They are unsure which path to choose and have read discussions on the topic. They are interested in physics but are concerned about the career path and are attracted to the idea of working outdoors and traveling. They also mention a Facebook group for CCS students.

Senior in HS. Just got accepted to UCSB mech eng and CCS physics departments (also Davis and Rose Hulman ME). Not sure which way to go. Have read lots of threads here. I love physics and the idea of creating knowledge but the career path seems nebulous whereas the ME/CE career seems rather straight forward.

Like the idea of working outdoors. Like the idea of not having to live in a big city to earn a living. Would love to work oversees. Does a career in physics typically offer these opportunities?

If any of these schools offer an engineering physics degree, that may give you the best of both worlds.

1. What is the difference between UCSB Mech Eng and CCS Physics?

UCSB Mech Eng (Mechanical Engineering) is an engineering major focused on the design, analysis, and production of mechanical systems and components, while CCS Physics (College of Creative Studies Physics) is a physics major that emphasizes a more theoretical and conceptual understanding of the physical world.

2. Which major is more math-intensive, UCSB Mech Eng or CCS Physics?

CCS Physics is generally considered to be more math-intensive, as it requires a strong foundation in calculus and advanced mathematics in order to understand and apply the principles of physics.

3. Can I switch between UCSB Mech Eng and CCS Physics?

Yes, it is possible to switch between these two majors at UCSB. However, it is important to note that CCS Physics is a highly selective program and may have additional requirements for transfer students.

4. What career opportunities are available for graduates of UCSB Mech Eng and CCS Physics?

Graduates of UCSB Mech Eng may find employment in a variety of industries such as automotive, aerospace, and energy, while graduates of CCS Physics often pursue careers in research, academia, or technology. Both majors also provide a strong foundation for graduate studies in their respective fields.

5. Are there any research opportunities for undergraduates in UCSB Mech Eng or CCS Physics?

Yes, both majors offer research opportunities for undergraduates. UCSB Mech Eng students can participate in research through the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Research Program, while CCS Physics students have access to research opportunities through the College of Creative Studies and the Department of Physics.
