I recently acquired an old oiless Gast vacuum pump for low vacuum experiments. What is the optimal configuration for interfacing with common vacuum chambers, assuming the pump will be on the floor? Connecting flexible tubing (via an adapter) to the input of the inlet filter? (e.g., http://www.bioproductsatguelph.ca/bddc/research/facilities/large/vacuum_pump.jpg" [Broken]) Or should I use a rigid PVC/metal vertical tube and elbow to exceed the height of the table, or will this be too unstable? Also, what is the recommended placement of the check valve, inlet filter, vacuum gauge, and bleed valve (if necessary)? Finally, what is the purpose of that metal spring valve (at the inlet) and the outlet pressure gauge, visible in the picture?
