Am told there's a VPN that only gives access to certain websites. So it's not one enabling you to surf the internet as if you were in a virtual place, accessing all websites that are 'local' to that virtual place. Is there such a VPN?

Just out of curiosity, why would you WANT such a limited capability?

Couldn't someone want a capability to limit (e.g. to restrict his kids (not that realistically that's practicable)), as distinguished from a limited capability?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, it allow you to connect to a network over a network connection. It was traditionally used to provide access to a specific network only, for example to allow people to work remotely while still accessing the office computers/servers while dialled in via a modem.. The fact the internet came along afterwards is just coincidense and the you could also grant access to the internet if you wished.

Generally speaking that server your VPN connects to can be configured to allow access to whatever it wants you to, be it a single web server, a company network, or the entire internet. If you like it can work like a firewall.
