In summary, water hammer occurs when valves are opened and closed quickly, causing a shock wave due to the water's velocity. This can be reduced by closing valves slowly, allowing the water to slow down. The presence of other appliances drawing water can also affect the fluid dynamics and contribute to water hammer.

Why does water hammer come and go, i can turn my hot tap on say ten times, and the water hammer will only occur six times.

It depends on how quickly you open and close valves. If you close a valve quickly, the water inside the plumbing still has velocity but no where to go, so you get a shock wave. If you close the valve slowly, the fluid in the plumbing has time to slow down. If you have dishwasher, washing machine, etc, drawing water then this effects the fluid dynamics in the plumbing.

1. What is water hammer and what causes it?

Water hammer is a phenomenon that occurs when there is a sudden increase or decrease in water flow in a plumbing system. This can be caused by a variety of factors, such as closing a valve too quickly, high water pressure, or the sudden release of air pockets in the pipes.

2. How does water hammer affect the plumbing system?

Water hammer can cause damage to pipes, fittings, and appliances within the plumbing system. It can also create loud banging noises and vibrations, which can be disruptive and bothersome.

3. Can water hammer be prevented?

Yes, water hammer can be prevented by installing a water hammer arrestor, which is a device that absorbs the shock of sudden water flow changes. It is also important to properly maintain and adjust water pressure levels in the plumbing system.

4. What are some common solutions for water hammer?

In addition to installing a water hammer arrestor, other solutions for water hammer include adding air chambers to the plumbing system, properly securing pipes and fixtures, and reducing water pressure through the use of pressure-reducing valves.

5. Is water hammer a serious issue?

While water hammer may not seem like a major problem, it can cause damage to the plumbing system and should be addressed to prevent further issues. It can also be a sign of underlying issues with the plumbing system, so it is important to address it promptly.
