WTC 7: What Happened? Why Did It Collapse?

In summary, WTC 7 was a 47-story building located next to the Twin Towers in New York City that collapsed on 9/11. The exact cause of the collapse is still debated, but the official report by NIST cites fire-induced thermal expansion and other factors as contributing to the collapse. There is no evidence to support the theory of a controlled demolition and the collapse prompted changes in building codes and safety measures.

Yesterday is the first time I heard that there where three WTC buildings, not two that was destroyed. How/Why did the WTC 7 go down?

It was severly damaged in the collapse of the twin towers. There is a wiki artical.

WTC 7 collapsed due to fire and damage from the collapse of the north tower. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_World_Trade_Center

Since this topic quickly leads to conspiracy theory and the nutcases will invariably come out of the woodwork at seeing this, it is a banned topic.

1. What is WTC 7 and why is it significant?

WTC 7, also known as World Trade Center Building 7, was a 47-story skyscraper located next to the Twin Towers in New York City. It was not hit by a plane during the 9/11 attacks, but it collapsed in the late afternoon of that day. Its collapse has been a subject of debate and controversy, making it a significant event in the aftermath of 9/11.

2. Why did WTC 7 collapse?

The exact cause of the collapse of WTC 7 is still a matter of debate. The official report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) concludes that the building collapsed due to fire-induced thermal expansion of long-span beams and connections in the building's east side, which caused a critical column to fail and led to the progressive collapse of the entire structure.

3. Were there any other factors that contributed to the collapse of WTC 7?

Yes, the NIST report also states that the collapse of WTC 7 was exacerbated by the lack of water for fire suppression, the failure of the building's sprinkler system, and the presence of diesel fuel tanks in the building that provided additional fuel for the fires.

4. Is there any evidence to suggest that the collapse of WTC 7 was a controlled demolition?

There is no credible evidence to support the theory that WTC 7 was brought down by a controlled demolition. The NIST report thoroughly investigated this possibility and concluded that there is no evidence of a controlled demolition, and that the collapse was consistent with the observed fire damage and structural failures.

5. Have there been any changes in building codes or safety measures as a result of the collapse of WTC 7?

Yes, the collapse of WTC 7 prompted changes in building codes and safety measures. The NIST report identified several deficiencies in the building's design and construction, as well as the response to the fire, and made recommendations for improvements. These recommendations have been incorporated into building codes and practices to improve the safety and resilience of buildings in the event of a fire or other emergency.
