Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the chemical nature of KMnO4, specifically in its acidified dilute form. Participants explore whether KMnO4 can be considered a molecular formula for acidified potassium permanganate and discuss its properties in relation to acid-base chemistry.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that KMnO4 is the molecular formula for potassium permanganate.
  • One participant questions whether KMnO4 could be considered the salt of a weak acid, HMnO4, and if acidifying a dilute solution would regenerate the acid form.
  • Another participant provides a pKa value of around -0.3 and argues that the pH of the solution would be almost perfectly neutral, suggesting that KMnO4 does not behave as a weak acid.
  • A later reply clarifies that there is no single molecular formula for acidified dilute potassium permanganate, stating that it is a mixture rather than a compound.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the nature of KMnO4 in acidified dilute form, with no consensus reached regarding its classification as a compound or mixture.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention the dependence on definitions regarding the classification of KMnO4 and its behavior in solution, which may affect the interpretation of its properties.

KMnO4 is potassium permanganate.

is KMnO4 the molecular formula for Acidified dilute potassium permanganate?

queenofbabes:
KMnO4 is potassium permanganate.

Another way the question could be asked might be, "Is KMnO4 the salt of a weak acid, HMnO4, and if you acidify a dilute solution of the salt, would this regenerate the acid form?" We have been educated to not think so, but thinking logically, the question seems to be a good one.

pKa around -0.3

I would say answer is - no. pH of the solution will be almost perfectly neutral.

ok... then,
so what should i write for the molecular formula of Acidified dilute potassium permanganate?

There is no single molecular formula. This is not a compound - this is a mixture.

oh oops,
thank you!
