# What is the proper name for this numerical integration method?

• NSX
In summary, The correct term for this method is Runge-Kutta, which is spelled as "Runge-Katta" by some and pronounced as "Runga-Katta" by others. It has approximately 223,000 hits on Google. However, it has also been mispronounced and misspelled by various sources.

Runga-Kutta or Runge-Kutta

What's the correct name for this method?

On google, there's more hits for the latter, at 193 to 37, but what did you guys learn it as?

My prof calls it Runge-Katta in his lecture notes, and Runga-Katta in the problem set.

I misspelled Kutta as Katta
But thanks for pointing out Runga vs. Runge

it's spelled (spelt?) runge-kutta but I've heard it pronounced runga-kutta

Arildno should tell us.He's Norwegian. The correct spelling of their names is much more important than pronounciation, right?

Daniel.

Tell that to de Broglie

Agreed..

Galileo,you tell it to Schwarzschild...

Daniel.

Great guys!

Thanks so much!

As for pronounciation, my prof calls it "Runga" Katta too

<_<

Or poor Ångström, both of whose vowels get mangled in typical (American, at least) English pronunciation, even if we remember to put in the diacritical marks.

## 1. What is Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta?

Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta is a numerical method used for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs). It is a popular algorithm for approximating the solution of initial value problems in mathematics and engineering.

## 2. Who developed the Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method?

The Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method was independently developed by German mathematicians Carl David Tolmé Runge and Wilhelm Kutta in the late 19th century. However, it was not widely used until the 1960s when computers became more accessible.

## 3. How does the Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method work?

The Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method works by breaking down the ODE into smaller time intervals and using a weighted average of the derivative at different points within each interval to approximate the solution. It is a higher-order method, meaning it provides a more accurate approximation compared to simpler methods like Euler's method.

## 4. What are the advantages of using the Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method?

The Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method is more accurate than simpler methods like Euler's method, especially for solving stiff ODEs. It also has a higher convergence rate, meaning it can provide a more accurate approximation with fewer time steps. Additionally, it is suitable for solving a wide range of ODEs, including systems of ODEs.

## 5. Are there any limitations to using the Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method?

One limitation of the Runga-Katta or Runge-Katta method is that it can be more computationally expensive compared to simpler methods. It also requires the calculation of multiple derivatives at each time step, which can introduce round-off errors. Additionally, it may not be suitable for solving ODEs with discontinuities or singularities.
