In summary, there is a common misconception that the Great Wall of China is the only manmade object visible from space. However, this is not true as many human constructs can be seen from Earth orbit. This was proven by the creation of the terradata.com database by Microsoft, which allowed users to view aerial images of the entire US and most of the world. While there is no confirmed picture of the Great Wall from the moon, there are actually many other things visible from space, depending on the altitude.

There is a longstanding myth that the Great Wall of China is the only manmade object visible from space. It and several variations on the theme are great fodder for water cooler arguments. In reality, many human constructs can be seen from Earth orbit.

this is cool. About 5 years back microsoft created the terradata.com database with arial views of the entire US and most of the world that you could pull up and view. not sure if it still exists, but it was pretty cool- I was able to pull up my city and basically see my house-from a few years back.

what I've heard is that the Great Wall was visible from the moon.
(although never found a picture to confirm this...)

Evidently there are a lot of things visible from space. Depends how high you are...

What is visible from space?

From space, you can see Earth's landmasses, bodies of water, and clouds. You can also see human-made structures, such as cities, highways, and airports. Natural features, such as mountains, deserts, and forests, are also visible from space.

Can you see individual buildings from space?

No, individual buildings are not visible from space. The human eye can only distinguish objects that are at least 30 meters in diameter from space. Therefore, only large structures, such as cities and major highways, are visible.

Can you see the Great Wall of China from space?

Contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall of China is not visible from space. It is only about 5-9 meters wide, which is too narrow to be seen by the human eye from such a great distance. However, it is visible in satellite images.

What is the most visible man-made structure from space?

The most visible man-made structure from space is the International Space Station (ISS). It is about the size of a football field and orbits Earth at an altitude of about 250 miles. The ISS is visible to the naked eye as a bright moving object in the night sky.

Can you see the Great Barrier Reef from space?

Yes, the Great Barrier Reef is visible from space. It is the largest coral reef system in the world, stretching over 2,300 kilometers along the coast of Australia. The reef's vibrant colors and distinctive shape can be seen from space in satellite images.
