Which waves can be polarized?

    What does polarization mean? The direction of -what- in a wave does it specify? If I say that a wave has linear polarization along the y direction, what does that mean?

    Can a wave that has oscillations along the direction of propagation have polarization? The answer to this question should immediately answer the one you were given.
