It really seems like the same game, if you enjoyed Age of Empires then you will enjoy this...I would recommend Stronghold I/II. IMO, it is a much better game.

Welcome to American Conquest was a real-time strategy game published by CDV Software Entertainment in 2003. The game was developed by GSC Game World, a Ukrainian video game developer.

The lead designer and director of the game was Alexey Semyonov. The game also had a team of composers, including Andrey Subbotin, Peter Gabriel, and Sergey Khmelevsky.

As for if it is as good as Age of Empires, that is a subjective question and depends on personal preference. Some players may prefer the historical accuracy and realism of American Conquest, while others may prefer the gameplay and mechanics of Age of Empires.
