In summary, this conversation revolves around a video of extreme athletes skydiving, particularly one called "Pure Insanity" which involves jumping out of a perfectly good plane with a can of Red Bull, trusting a skydiving buddy, and free falling for at least 20 seconds. The concept of insanity is discussed, with some considering it a calculated risk and others questioning the safety of the activity. The video also features other stunts, such as wing suit flying and speed rock climbing. The participants, including well-known athlete Travis Pastrana, are known for their extreme and dangerous stunts.

Take:

One perfectly good small plane + one extreme athlete + one can red bull, + three jumping buddies + one hidden harness
+ at least 20 seconds of free fall (I timed it) + absolute trust in sky diving buddy = Pure Insanity...

That's my definition...

What's your's ?

My definition of nuts : the plural of nut.
nut : usually large hard-shelled seed (check out the dictionary for other definitions[/url])

I remember my uncle (a pilot for AA) once saying that only idiots and bird droppings fall from the sky. Jumping out of a perfectly working aircraft, insanity.

The display doesn't work for me, and I just cut and pasted your youtube links from the html, they don't work either: Maybe it is a region thing, I am in the US. See the hl=en_US argument.

http://www.youtube.com/v/wWSfeFYjeNs&hl=en_US&fs=1

When I tried it in IE versus Firefox, it said it needed Adobe, Shockwave player, I downloaded and installed it, same thing, no display, no play.

proton soup,

Thanks, they work. I sent the first link with the wing suits to a friend a year or two ago long before they became popular and made 60 minutes. They second link with the speed rock climber not roped is equally nuts. I believe Greg said he died while climbing, too bad, at least it was doing what he loved.

Okay, so that's how you describe it using a pseudo-equation, what's your definition though?

Dear Capt Obvious:

To me it means taking calculated risk with failure resulting in death or severe injury. Cost (extremely high for failure, death) versus benefit (about 1 min 30 seconds of pure fear and excitement). For guys like Pastrana, it's pretty much how he lives his life. I imagine he and his buddies story boarded and rehearsed on the ground for some time before trying to pull this off. I am pretty sure the guy who hooked up his harness has thousands of jumps under his belt.

BTW, a few years ago he crashed his sports car at high speed with a buddy inside (really dumb), split it in half and his friend is still not fully functional, nerve damage, paralysis, etc... Pastrana has to live with that every day of his life. His friend holds no grudge however. I guess he realized when he got in the car with him, what could possibly happen.

Pastrana is so gnarly. You've got to hand it to Streetbike Tommy for some of the stuff he does though!

I'm not sure I buy that. A parachute opening is a pretty violent thing - I don't think you can hold onto someone with your legs when your parachute opens (nor would you want to try!).

There was a belt around him too I believe

He had a harness under his underwear. It was on Nitro Circus Season 2 or 3 I believe. And it is in Nitro Circus 4 the movie.

Woah. Get that wrong and you'll have the mother of all wedgies.

A couple more, my last:

How about a wheelie on a deserted (road/runway?) in the rain at over 200 mph, I couldn't believe it either.
In the second video in the dry recorded an official 214 mph with a radar gun.
I am surprised "Ghost" isn't in prison or dead.

Or a British Air Force pilot in a multimillion dollar one of a kind land rocket
at over 763 mph in combined runs, two passes were needed to establish the land speed record, breaking the sound barrier.
Still insanely dangerous...

Enjoy...

seen the ghost rider vids before. he's a dangerous nut. our highways are littered with the greasy stains of kids trying to be like him.

Except for the misspelled title this is worth watching, not nuts (close) makes you wonder how many takes it took for the "impossible" to happen.

Impossible is nothing 2

The guy swimming through a hole in the ice definitely counts as nuts! The rest clearly took a lot of practice and are neat tricks. That hole in one from a helicopter was really cool! A few others were nuts if you think about what they were doing to learn and practice the trick before getting good at it.

Moonbear,

Yeah, you are right some are nuts, others before perfected when injuries occurred (most likely) were nuts too, but he persevered, the mountain bike shots fall into this category, IMHO.

What is your definition of NUTS?

NUTS stands for "Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics" and is a hierarchical classification system used by the European Union for statistical purposes. It divides countries into regions and sub-regions for the purpose of collecting and organizing data.

How is NUTS used in scientific research?

NUTS is used in scientific research to standardize the classification of geographical regions and facilitate the comparison of data across different countries. This allows for more accurate and reliable analysis of data and trends.

What are the different levels of NUTS?

NUTS has three levels: NUTS 1, NUTS 2, and NUTS 3. NUTS 1 represents the largest regions within a country, such as states or provinces. NUTS 2 represents smaller regions within NUTS 1 regions, and NUTS 3 represents even smaller regions within NUTS 2 regions.

How often is NUTS updated?

The NUTS classification is updated every three years to reflect changes in administrative boundaries and demographic trends. The most recent update was in 2021.

Are there other similar classification systems to NUTS?

Yes, there are other classification systems used for statistical purposes, such as the Standard Geographical Classification (SGC) used in Canada and the Census Bureau's Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas used in the United States. However, NUTS is specifically used for statistical purposes in the European Union.
