A curve of radius 30 m is banked at an angle θ. Find θ
For which a car can round the curve at 40km/h even if the road is frictionless.
In this case only two forces act on the car: gravity and the normal force. Since the road is banked, the normal force has a horizontal component , that supplies the needed centripetal force . In figure 5-32, the forces exerted by the road on the car are represented by Fn1 and Fn2. These forces are combined into Fn in the Figure 5-33. We find this angle by applying Newton’s second law. The total normal force has the component Fn sin θ directed toward the center of the curve, which provides the centripetal acceleration of the car.
