Graduate Eugene Wigner's take on math's role in the natural sciences #1
Sorry about that. I should've checked: http://www.ipod.org.uk/reality/reality_wigner.pdf QUOTE=mathman;3842087]There are essentially two parts to the answer. First the population distribution is being approximated by the normal distribution. Second the normal distribution (like any...- absurdist

Graduate Eugene Wigner's take on math's role in the natural sciences #1
I had this posted under the wrong field earlier until I realized it's an applied mathematics question An excerpt from The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences by Eugene Wigner "There is a story about two friends, who were classmates in high school, talking...- absurdist

Undergrad Thermodynamics : Only experimental?
So this is because we can simply calculate the macroscopic properties you mean? What is the difference b/w macroscopic and microscopic thermodynamics in your context?- absurdist

Undergrad Thermodynamics : Only experimental?
HAHA Might as well: COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN THERMODYNAMICS, PG 2 "Thermodynamics is an exacting experimental science because it has turned out to be quite difficult and time-consuming to make very accurate measurements of properties over a range of condtns (Temp, Press,Comp) over a wide...- absurdist

Undergrad Thermodynamics : Only experimental?
Sorry, zoned out for a bit. Why is it that the "STATISTICS" cannot be numerically solved. Why do we solve it statistically, I mean instead of other tools?- absurdist

Do Hard Work and Starting Young Determine Intellectual Superiority?
In what way have you ever felt slow-witted in comparison to your peers? What would you attribute their intellectual superiority (in that field) to, HARD WORK, STARTING YOUNG? For example, my friend told me that she had decided to switch from theoretical to experimental physics because she...- absurdist

Undergrad Thermodynamics : Only experimental?
Ok I read in a book that thermodynamics is an experimental science. What exactly does experimental science mean? Also does computational science come under experimental science or as an alternative to it?- absurdist

Undergrad Mysteries in Classical Physics
Sry for the late reply, By mystery, I mean some kind of discrepancy between two widely accepted theories or some kind of lack of knowledge of the some mechanism? By Classical Mechanics I mean Mechanics, Heat and Themodynamics and not QM, Nuclear phy and modern physics (string theory, etc) Is...- absurdist

Graduate What's Left to Discover in Chemical and Thermal Physics?
I think your example is more Astrophysics, you'd probably need background in astronomy/cosmology, I suppose. I am beginning to think most of the theories have been proven to the extent of no further fundamental discoveries. Now there's only room for applied research.- absurdist
