Using grep to find a file that does not contain a word.

I have a bunch of files that I want to find the ones that do not contain a word. I think that I can use grep to do this but I am not sure. does anyone know how to do this?

    An approximation for exponential.

The trouble with that is that you can not say that exp(-k*L)=1+-k*L. you need the entire sum.

    An approximation for exponential.

L is large but finite. No assumptions about k but it is positive.

    An approximation for exponential.

Is there an approximation for exp(-k*L) with L large but finite??

Stat test to test for dependents of continous variables.

I have N sets of data with M variables. The variables are continous. I want to know if variable a is independent of the M-1 other variables. What stat test do I use? The chi-square test is sort of what I want but it is for non-continous, catagorized variables.

    Predicting enviromental conditions from configurations

have a bunch of different configurations of a single molecule under some sort of enviromental conditions. They are not of course the same configuration because of fluctations. I have another bunch of different configurations of the same molecule under different or the same conditions (this is...

    Fit data in multiple dimensions.

I have a bunch of data x1, x2, x3, ... x49, z. I need a function f(x1, x2,... x49)=z. Does anyone have suggestions for a method that they have used before or key words to google?

Which laptop will be better for a physics major: Macbook vs. Sony

The laptop that I am thinking about it from the Z series. The way that I figure that it is a cool running computer is by looking at forums and user reviews on the web. While quite a few of the other laptops I looked up had many complaints of heat, I only could only find one for the model I am...

Which laptop will be better for a physics major: Macbook vs. Sony

Portability is important. This is pretty much going to be my primary computer and not going to have a desktop also. Heat is my biggest concern though. My current laptop gets hot with little use. And extremely hot with a lot of use.

Which laptop will be better for a physics major: Macbook vs. Sony

    I am going to buy a laptop very soon. I think that I have narrowed it down to two laptops: Apple MacBook 13.3" 4.5lb. Processor:Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile 2.4GHz RAM:4GB DDR3 Hard Drive: 250GB 5400rpm Sony VAIO 13.1" 3.4lb. Processor:Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile 2.4GHz RAM:4GB DDR3 Hard...

    Relativity, trains, and running passenger

Well, once I get over all of the algerbra mistakes, my answer for part a and b are the same. I think that I am kind of using the Lorentz transforms in a way. One glaringly wrong statement that I made earlier is that the speed of the passenger in the passenger's frame is v2 when it should be...

    Relativity, trains, and running passenger

So are you saying that the time in the passengers frame is L/sqrt(1-(v2/c)^2)/v2 but to transform it to the grounds frame I should do something like L/sqrt(1-(v2/c)^2)/v2*sqrt(1-((v1+v2)/(1+v1*v2/c^2))^2/(c)^2)? In other words, my gamma is 1/sqrt(1-(u/c)^2)?

    Relativity, trains, and running passenger

Homework Statement A train of proper length L moves at speed v1 with respect to the ground. A passenger runs from the back of the train to the front at speed v2 with respect to the train. How much time does this take as viewed by some one on the ground? a) Find the relative speed of...
