Question about evolution - intermediate evolutionary traits
It's not necessarily right to assume everything that evolved had or has an adaptive purpose, or was "selected for". Gould and Lewontin coined... or should I say, adapted from architecture, the term Spandrel to describe inadvertent by-products of something that is selected for. An example in...- BenG549

Undergrad Reappearing Waves: Hi! Uncover the Mystery
Do you have an example of this. As far as I am aware if two wave of equal magnitude and opposite phase destructively interfere with each other the waves do not spontaneously "reappear". -

Unraveling the Mystery of How Music Evokes Emotions
Next to... You have 3 notes played on a keyboard. It doesn't matter the size of the interval between the 1st and 2nd note as long at the interval between the 2nd and 3rd is the same "magnitude". "decreasing vocal pitch is used to indicate strength and social dominance, whereas increasing...- BenG549

Unraveling the Mystery of How Music Evokes Emotions
"maybe advances in science stem as much from the imagination and creativity as works of art? Could it be that the ‘artistic’ process is more disciplined, and regulated than might seem?" Yeah this was the point I was trying to make earlier, not sure I totally agree with it but there is at...- BenG549

Are There Limits to Our Willpower?
Interesting that you say 99%.. I know it's a figure of speech but in my experience people are very unaware of how much of a positive effect they can have on their own lives, just by changing the way they behave and think about certain things. For example, it have been shown that sitting or...- BenG549

Reversing/curing hearing loss (part 2)
This is incredible! I studied hearing loss very briefly as a student of acoustics. Although, as you said, this only refers to a specific type of hearing loss, it is fantastic!- BenG549

Graduate How do I measure flexural vibrations on a rectangular plate supported by rods?
This is definitely true to a certain extent, the body of the guitar definitely vibrates and this enhances the sound (compare strumming an unplugged electric guitar and an acoustic guitar) this is because the noise radiates from the vibrating body in the same way your phone sounds louder when it... -

Graduate Is speed of light a teleportation?
Do you suggest I remove that section of my post, to save any confusion? To be honest the videos are really very good. Professor Muller is a very well respected physicist, his lectures are a really useful resource for people without a good mathematical background.- BenG549

Graduate Is speed of light a teleportation?
Not sure I said anything to the contrary, I understand that this is the case, that passage was copied and pasted from the website that I cited, sorry if was worded badly, maybe I should have read it more carefully before posting. I provided the other links to clarify, in case the story was...- BenG549

Graduate Understanding General Relativity
Distance form a gravitational source will have an effect on time, so your head ages at a different rate to your feet! Hmm... The gravitational force can be thought more of as the bending of spacetime by an object. If you imagine placing a spherical object on a simply supported large piece of...- BenG549

Graduate Is speed of light a teleportation?
The links above I posted explain length contraction at speeds close to the speed of light as well as time dilation.- BenG549

Graduate Is speed of light a teleportation?
Definitely not teleportation, you do however experience time dilation when traveling at great speeds. The following is a bit a of a long winded story I took from: http://www.costellospaceart.com/html/time_and_the_speed_of_light.html "Travelling at speeds close to the speed of light has a great...- BenG549

Undergrad Earth Travel Speed: 800 km/s in Universe?
Ahhh, right. Nice one, good knowledge I'll remember that! So in fact the observed speed would be: v = c/(1+0.25)... i.e. 0.8c. Cool. I have to admit the idea of being able to observe something appearing to travel faster than light did give me pause for thought lol.- BenG549

Undergrad Earth Travel Speed: 800 km/s in Universe?
Sorry, not a physicist; I have a conceptual knowledge of relativity and the ideas and limitations of traveling close to/at the speed of light but I was assuming that, for example if I were in a ship traveling in one direction at 0.5c, someone traveling in the opposite direction at 0.5 would...- BenG549
