Help with leaf electroscope for school use please!
Welcome to PF. That would seem to be a good thing to try. You could even try drying rice in an oven and then quickly putting that into the bottom of the jar and sealing it. Can you upload a picture of the jars? (use the "Attach files" link below the Edit window)- berkeman

So it is reading 3024mVdc? What if you take the meter off of autorange and force a DC and then an AC range? What meter is it?- berkeman

Welcome to PF. Is it maybe an AC reading instead of DC? It sounds like you meter is autoranging? I don't know what could cause an AAA alkaline battery to generate an AC voltage -- maybe a bad/intermittant internal connection?- berkeman
