Undergrad What is the purpose of unit vectors in mechanics?
This and the explanation in my tutorial helped me clarify things. Also to put it short, do we use unit vectors to specify a certain finite length or interval within a vector of total length V? -

Undergrad What is the purpose of unit vectors in mechanics?
I've been reading and studying from 'Engineering Mechanics - STATICS 5th edition' by Beford and Fowler and it says that the definition of the unit vector e is that it has a magnitude of 1. Then e.g. V = |V|e Then isn't it just V = |V|? I still find unit vectors pointless/confusing. I need... -

High School Electric Eel: Why It Doesn't Shock Itself
This reminds me of my high school chemistry days of osmosis, where in natural systems higher concentrations move to regions to lower concentration. I guess this concept extends beyond biological systems.- CGUE

High School A Mathematical Mystery Revealed
A very interesting article for all. http://www.math.utah.edu/~palais/pi.html Quote from the article: "What really worries me is that the first thing we broadcast to the cosmos to demonstrate our 'intelligence' is 3.14... I am a bit concerned about what the lifeforms who receive it will do...- CGUE

High School Which is Better for Mechanics: mg or W (Weight)?
When working out problems in mechanics by drawing free body diagrams and so on, I personally find it better to write mg rather than W (weight) because I confuse it with work. -

Computing in Mechanical Engineering?
I ask all Mechanical Engineers, if you do use a computer programming language to aid in your problem solving and work, which one do you use? I use Visual Basic For Applications (VBA) which is integrated with Microsoft Excel 97 and onwards, but my university recommends a proper computing course...- CGUE

Graduate Lagarias’ equivalence to the Riemann hypothesis
Lagarias’ equivalence to the Riemann hypothesis should be discussed, i.e., if hn := n-th harmonic number := 1/1 + 1/2 + · · · + 1/n, and σn := divisor function of n := sum of positive divisors of n, then if n > 1, hn + ehn ln hn > σn. There is a $1,000,000 prize for the proof of this at... -

Undergrad What are the real-world applications of linear algebra?
In Chemical Engineering, determining whether production levels can be met in a refinery. e.g. no solutions if production levels cannot be met. In Economics, determining the supply and demand of certain products. Negative numbers mean imports must be required to sustain the product or...- CGUE

Undergrad How to Study for an Algebra Test on Vectors and Matrices?
Hmm yeah I got the harder paper and when I solved for the intersection between two planes I was lost when I got infinite solutions after using Gaussian Elimination. And I still couldn't grasp the concept of linear combination of vectors, i.e. I haven't found a mechanical way to solve...- CGUE

Undergrad How to Study for an Algebra Test on Vectors and Matrices?
If you could offer any tips for studying for an Algebra test for tomorrow morning it would be great. It covers: Vectors: Vector quantities and $\mathbb{R^n}$ $\mathbb{R^2}$ and analytic geometry Points, line segments and lines. Parametric vector equations. Parallel lines. Planes. Linear...- CGUE

Civil vs. Mechanical Engineering (for 2nd semester 2008)
My computing course does teach us how to program in Visual Basic and use both Visual Basic and Microsoft Excel to solve problems in finance and engineering. A few examples of mathematical problems to be solved in either include the Newton-Raphson method, factorials, calculating the trajectory...- CGUE

Undergrad Sector angle and segment area just given only 2 variables ?
Is there a way to calculate the sector angle and segment area of a circle just given only the radius and the length of the circle ? So far I can only calculate the sagitta length using the radius and length of the chord i.e. S = r - \sqrt{r^2 - \frac{1}{2}l^2} Where r is the radius of the...- CGUE
