Undergrad Questions about bubble behaviour
The differing refractive indices do provide an insight into the stream flow. I tried to video it with a cheap smartphone but it does not have macro on the video, so it is unusable. An iphone xx Pro costs a fortune The solution to this puzzle seems similar to dark matter, which is proposed as...- Chiefly

Undergrad Questions about bubble behaviour
Agreed, the surface of the fluid under the bubble is curved down. The weight of the bubble displaces a small amount of fluid due to bouyancy much like a 50 ton hovercraft displaces as much as a 50 ton vessel. But why should the hydrostatic pressure be lower? If it were lower, then fluid would be...- Chiefly

Undergrad Questions about bubble behaviour
Baluncore - A very detailed and convincing reply. The asymmetric flow caused by the bubble stream is partially visible in the fluid due to the different fluid types being visible. Maybe caused by the oil you mentioned. I studied a bubble over a rising stream, and as before, this one moved off...- Chiefly

Undergrad Questions about bubble behaviour
Don't worry it is a new day, so nearly time to set up today's experiment. As they say, 'good experiments are repeatable by peers'.- Chiefly

Undergrad Questions about bubble behaviour
Watching the bubble that formed on top of my Gin and Tonic was interesting. First I noticed a fine stream of bubbles coming up under a larger surface bubble. The fine stream, about 5-10 per second were just visible. The surface bubble moved around some 1/4 or 1/2 diameter of the bubble in what...- Chiefly

@elcaro - Do you have the link to that video. -

Undergrad Is it time to take the 'bang' out of the Big Bang?
Excellent post and really helps, would have liked to see the whole lecture with his associates. -

High School Are there more theories about the start of our Universe?
elcaro - your post regarding 'taking the bang out of the big bang' was super interesting not just because P Steinhard was a great proponent of the big bang and has now changed to a cyclic concept but importantly the theory as he explains it does not have any of the problems associated with... -

High School Are there more theories about the start of our Universe?
Looking through the various most popular theories (or conjectures, thanks Buzz) I struggle to find one that seems to allow for the super massive black holes that were reported to be formed by Smethurst at around 670 million years from the start of the universe. Super massive BH being around 1... -

High School Are there more theories about the start of our Universe?
Thanks ohwilleke. Penrose and his cyclic cosmology proposed that all matter ends up in black holes, what happens to those black holes depended on the duration of the universe and it needs a long long time to meet the cyclic conditions of decay by Hawking radiation. Penrose and Loeb (the... -

High School Are there more theories about the start of our Universe?
I am quite a fan of Penrose so if you could provide more detail of his 'thingy' I would be delighted to read it. Never heard of Smolin's theory so any details about that would be fun even though discredited. -

High School Are there more theories about the start of our Universe?
I have heard of and read about the big bang theory for the start of our universe. Are there other competing theories that I should look at. Thanks Chiefly -

BoringFans Are There Other Competing Theories for the Big Bang?
Hello berkeman I made post that was deleted and called personal speculation. Maybe I should have asked if the start of the universe could have been a collapsed previous universe. That is not speculation but a question. May I re write my post in a better form as i am still interested in peoples...- Chiefly

BoringFans Are There Other Competing Theories for the Big Bang?
Hello all Glad be here and now I have retired it is a favourite place to browse. Many years ago I was involved in nuclear industry and worked on the nuclear submarine reactors hence my interest in physics.- Chiefly
