2012 Physics and Astronomy REU Programs
Concerning REUs wanting students who are in the earlier parts of their college career, I do remember seeing a math REU last year that explicitly didn't want people with a lot of courses past calculus. Not sure about physics. I've been accepted to RPI and U Toledo's programs so far. I'll...- Cider

"Solving an Impossible Integral: 360 the Answer?
Using 0^+ would simply make it so that the integrand is defined everywhere in your integration. It still would diverge to infinity if the limit as gamma went to 0 sent the integrand to infinity, though.- Cider

"Solving an Impossible Integral: 360 the Answer?
There's nothing wrong with how you've used degrees instead of radians in your integral. What matters is that you're consistent and the arguments of each have the right meaning. Since you are varying gamma in degrees, there's no issue with it. LCKurtz comment is the exactly same when replacing pi...- Cider

Is this too much for a semester?
A standard course load is 4 in general. A standard course load for overachievers is 5. Since Math and Chem don't really have a lot of overlap, 4 classes a semester will not be enough if you want to get a double major. Have you worked out your four year schedule at all so figure out what classes...- Cider

Help With First Year Schedule - Physics Hons.
The things that denote honors courses vary from class to class and from school to school. Here, our honors calculus sequence is a much more proof-based, real math styled sequence. I skipped out of all the lower level math courses, but like pretty much all blanket statements, it doesn't apply to...- Cider

What Are the Best REU Opportunities to Explore This Summer?
I'd say try to talk to some of the professors you know about possibly getting something to do over the summer or if they know anyone that you would be able to do research under, at your University or elsewhere. That's what I'm planning to do should I have the same situation, though I've only...- Cider

Studying I'm doing EVERY exercise in munkres' topology textbook
My point being that there is no reason to post here anymore, as the purpose of the topic does not merit any more posts since it is no longer relevant to the original poster. That and to inform the person who revived it, clearly someone who is new, that they posted in a thread that is four years...- Cider

Physics B.S. Advice for Junior Undergrad
Most schools only allow a certain amount of overlapping between things in working towards majors/minors. That is, only a few of the courses can satisfy more than one of the two things. You will probably want to check that out first, because if the number that can overlap isn't large enough...- Cider

Is this a complete undergrad pure math curriculum?
On the quarter system I could see that many being fit in and it not being too different from the norm, but not a semester system. Also, I don't know how you can consider a course called Mathematical software a proof-based course, and the same thing possibly for numerical methods. Same thing goes...- Cider

Admissions How competitive are admissions to math phd programs ?
Check out some of the sites for various math REUs that are being held this summer. Most of them tend to have descriptions of what type of projects will be done and what necessary courses there are for it. There are a few that don't have prerequisites past linear algebra (though there are ones...- Cider
