No moon=no tides no tides=no life Is that entirely correct?

Also, I'm presuming that a planet in a super large eccentric orbit would be too cold, due to the huge distance from it's source star, to form a liquid ocean surface.

No moon=no tides no tides=no life Is that entirely correct?

Thank you both for your prompt replies. Naty1: from what I understand the Coriolis Effect caused from the Earths rotation is also mainly responsible for oceanic currents. Simon: Would I be correct in assuming the only possible way a planet with liquid oceans could have no, or minimal, tides is...

No moon=no tides no tides=no life Is that entirely correct?

no moon=no tides...no tides=no life... Is that entirely correct?? I was recently discussing origins of early life on our planet, the other person stated that he had read (from Prof Brian Cox I think) that: no moon=no tides...no tides=no life. Although our moon is the main influence on our...

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

As I mentioned I do tend to sway to the current flat universe hypothesis from the WMAP survey but what I was trying to say previously is, and although it is again off topic I feel I should explain myself, that although the data matches a flat-infinite universe to an approximate but fairly...

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

"No" I agree this time. Space is Flat (By flat I mean parallel and no intersecting lines) - Space-time is curved Just a quick question : "Probably off topic again" If space time is curved, then even the most minimal curvature would eventually produce a circle. Does that suggest space-time is...

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

Ok I may have been a little ambiguous with my statement regarding the WMAP. No :)

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

I'd probably trust the astrophysicists on this and would say model of the universe that is “flat and infinite" (although I use the term infinite loosely as the visible region of space) it seems to match the results pretty closely. There is always the possibility of some form of galactic...

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

I think you may have misunderstood what I was trying to say regarding (how one interprets the mathematics from the data received) I think it would be naive to simply "Wash, rinse, repeat." and not consider any other possibilities. To me that is not what science is about either (which apparently...

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

Yes I think we are probably going a little off topic of the original question "If space is flat why is space-time curved?" but I will say I certainly do not claim to agree or disagree to the 3 models I fore-mentioned as I was only presenting a few of the popular examples of late I have not once...

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

@ d3mm As I previously said they are all but theories.. The WMAP can show what ever it wants, but how one interprets the mathematics, it is still just another theory ready to dispute. But the fact is space-time geometry is manipulated by matter.

Is the Universe Truly Flat While Space-Time Curves?

From what I understand there are 3 main theories on the form of space. 1. "Big Crunch Theory" A closed universe (such as a sphere) with sufficient matter of all kinds to allow gravity to eventually halt the expansion of the cosmos. Expansion become contraction and the universe would disappear...

    Sudden Earth Rotation Deceleration Theory

Thanks Drakkith for your input and I appreciate the help.

    Sudden Earth Rotation Deceleration Theory

Oh I now realize inertia is already a fundamental factor in the formula.. Again I must apologise for my limited knowledge. In fact the last time I saw a numerator it was standing over a denominator.. Ok that was poor humour :)

    Sudden Earth Rotation Deceleration Theory

Ok I have done a few quick calculations and I now understand that it is a minimal increase of centrifugal acceleration, but I must admit the mathematics still eludes me as I was thinking if a person was standing at true north in the Arctic they are theoretically not subjected to the same...

    Sudden Earth Rotation Deceleration Theory

Thanks for your reply Filip as I didn't begin to know the calculations required. I was also just wondering does inertia also factor into the equations, and what rotational speed can you calculate may induce a centrifugal acceleration to essentially produce a 50% reduction in gravitational...
