Programming Advice for Physics BSc Student

Ok, let me introduce you to my problem. I am very interested in and am actively applying to many summer research positions but I find myself somewhat limited towards what I can apply for. My issue is that most of the positions, if not all, want programming experience and I have only done 1...

Confused Final Year Physics Student Seeking Advices

For Most of the masters programs I have seen in bio-physics it is perfectly normal to enter with a standard physics bachelors degree and most schools do offer a masters degree option. The biology side of most of these programs are provided through graduate level courses and self directed...

Confused Final Year Physics Student Seeking Advices

It can be hard to find good biophysics programs, but there are a wide range of options in North America that I am aware of. In my immediate area is The University of British Columbia which has a good biophysics graduate program as well as a CAMPEP accredited medical physics program at the...

Math Advice for Physics Majors: What Math Courses to Take

Ok, here's my issue; I'm a physics major just finishing up my first year, but I also love math, and I've been considering doing a double major. What math courses, other than those required by a physics degree, should I take? I have read that learning Fourier series would come in handy. I'm...

Life as a PhD Physicist: A Fresh Out of Grad School Perspective

No, you are right KS, I can't be 100% sure that that will make me happy, but I am already engaged to the love of my life, I have a large and loving family and lots of friends. So as far as a career in life goes the academic world appeals to me. I have been reading a lot of information on this...

Hate Linear Algebra? Advice for Applied Math?

Linear Algebra is most often the first abstract class an undergrad takes, I think that tends to be why most people have a difficult time with it. If you plan on doing more math than just first and second year calculus than understanding linear algebra and developing your abstract mathematical...

Life as a PhD Physicist: A Fresh Out of Grad School Perspective

I know you're right, and I am not going to base all my plans on a miraculous outcome but I am going to work as hard as I can and let my passion for the subject guide me. Whatever will be will be as long as i have physics I will be happy.

Fractional Weight Reduction from Gravitational Attraction of Water Tank

You can calculate the force between you and the water tank, then do the same thing between you and the Earth (which should essentially be F=ma) and compare. The centre of the water tank directly opposes the centre of the Earth so they are opposite forces. The effect of the water tank will be...

Life as a PhD Physicist: A Fresh Out of Grad School Perspective

Thank you, I appreciate your feedback. I absolutely love physics so far, I get butterflies in my stomach in class quite often. For the past few years I've dreamed about entering the academic world, but in my dreams I have always envisioned myself as being able to stay at one university and just...

What direction will the force from acceleration act in this scenario?

Ok, your diagram looks good. So now let's think about what is happening. The box falls off the truck and right before it hits the ground and begins to slow it is going 80 km/h. That velocity is in the same direction the truck was going, based on the orientation of your diagram the velocity is to...

What direction will the force from acceleration act in this scenario?

Once the box falls off the vehicle the force of friction is the force responsible for the acceleration. So in your case once it hits the ground µN=ma and it will be static once it comes to rest because the deceleration from friction is a reactionary force that resists motion.

Life as a PhD Physicist: A Fresh Out of Grad School Perspective

Hello there helpful people (at least I hope so). I've been lurking in the shadows of these forums since I stumbled upon them a week or so ago and I have come up with a question I have been unable to find enough information for. I'm in my first year of a BSc in physics, although its pretty...
