Summer 2013 Math and Science REU Thread

I know one person who has accepted an offer from Nevis. I don't know what that means w.r.t. other applicants (website hasn't been updated since Jan. 4).

Summer 2013 Math and Science REU Thread

I know Nevis Labs has sent out offers and so has DOE-SULI -- I accepted an offer from SULI for Fermilab

Suggestion on intro texts to read

Hello everyone, I'm in my sophomore year of undergrad and I've recently started to do some work for an experimental particle physicist at my university. Right now he's really into neutrino oscillations (MINOS collaboration member) and neutrinoless double beta decay (NEMO3/SuperNEMO...

2012 Physics and Astronomy REU Programs

Just got rejection from Vanderbilt. 9 positions for over 400 applicants. Apparently I heard back so late because they were waiting to hear back from people and I guess enough people said yes to knock me out lol oh well.

2012 Physics and Astronomy REU Programs

I got an e-mail back from Vanderbilt -- they're saying they hope to complete their review of applications by the end of this week.

2012 Physics and Astronomy REU Programs

Same here, good luck! I'm kind of thinking the same thing -- Maybe they're not sending anything out until all decisions are made. I guess the other possible outcomes are I've already been rejected by the early application and I'm in the running for the regular, or I've been completed rejected...

Has anyone heard from Vanderbilt? I've yet to hear and I applied before the early application deadline.

Why is chi^2/ndf close to 1 a good fit?

Why is \chi^2 / \mathrm{ndf} (number of degrees of freedom) close to one mean that a fit is a good fit?I have had this question for a long time, and now I'm currently in a lab where the instructor and TA's love to see you talk about \chi ^2 -- so it's killing me! All I have ever heard is that it...

Parametrization of a Corkscrew Curve on a Paraboloid

I realized this after thinking about for a while, the real parametrizaion I can't figure out is a curve that is a corkscrew getting narrower as it goes up around the parabolioid, starting at (\sqrt{2\pi},0,0) and ending at the top of the paraboloid, (0,0,2\pi)

Parametrization of a Corkscrew Curve on a Paraboloid

Homework Statement I'm doing a line integral and can't seem to figure out the parametrization of this curve: x^2+y^2+z=2\pi Homework Equations Looking to get it to the form: \textbf{c}(r,t)=(x(r,t),y(r,t),z(r,t)) (I don't even know if this is right though). The Attempt at a Solution Trying to...

Electric field of a charged ring.

I kind of follow your work, but I'm afraid I don't see the complete equation needed, so I will go ahead and derive it for you. Alrighty, here's a little picture to help us out. Let's keep this in mind throughout the whole problem. We know by symmetry that the electric field due to the ring at...
