hmmm, along with cool science one's got to learn a lot of math to be a good astrophysicist...
How about getting started on some algebra?? Ask your math teacher nicely if she could procure an algebra book for you to look at, I guarantee she'll be impressed and help you if you have any questions.
A lot of what you say is true twofish but my country of origin is also very poor and pretty much everyone is obsessed with education as the only means to a better life.
I know about and mostly agree with the arguments that you can't really change a system in two years, but then again I think...
Actually, I'm not sure at all if I like research in general. I like being an undergrad- learning physics, thinking about physics. Research...
The other thing is, I understand my motivations better than most (I like to think) but have less control over them than many (incurably lazy, not just...
eh...
there are "graduate courses" and then there are graduate courses. The former generally have a significant cohort of undergrads and can often be easier in terms of grading than undergrad weeder courses (though the material is much harder). Not sure if grades will matter to you at this...
OP- I am strongly considering doing what you are doing (I am a junior now). Just one thing is bugging me...I have very little formal community service hours! I am in a lot of extracurriculars like Nourish International and STAND, so I spend plenty of time "working" with human rights violations...
I'm in the guilt box right now.
I'm pretty sure I've flaked my way right out of any actual responsibility, to the point that my professor is just telling me to make random useless graphs.
I don't really know how to switch projects though (I want to look into a completely different subfield...
I have to disagree with Espen.
You only really need one technique to solve the differential equations (it's called separation of variables) and it's included in every quantum book.
Honestly, beginner's quantum is pretty easy. I'd say Griffiths level quantum is easier than Griffiths level E&M...
Yeah I know that, but still the difficulty of getting into a school will be somewhat proportional to its rank, if only because perceived rank is how the majority of students will apply.
I just don't want to waste hundreds of dollars on application fees- so I want to know what "tier" or range...
Well what counts as a decent GPA?
I have an A-/B+ average so a little above a 3.5
And I go to Duke, not sure how much that would impact things.
What I don't understand is that I'm usually in the top 25% of my classes but my gpa looks pretty terrible...I'm starting to get worried.
I know...
Math is important, but not *that* important. Most of the math you need gets covered in the physics class itself, and physicists tend to concentrate on different stuff than the mathematicians do (i.e. I've never had to prove existence or uniqueness explicitly in a physics class, but it's much...
I'm a third year undergraduate and I've noticed some very strange shifts in behavior from, say, a year ago. I actually study more than ever now, and my grades are higher. However, I absolutely can't bring myself to care about academics anymore. I never get stressed for exams. Studying and...
