Undergrad Can a block of aluminum become an electromagnet?
Wow! You guys are like the eye doctor! I can see clearly now. Thanks for the thorough description. I guess my flaw was in understanding how magnets work. I actually didn't know permanent magnets and electromagnets are so similar. So, the atoms (or ions) in an aluminum core aren't free to move...- eah2119

Undergrad Can a block of aluminum become an electromagnet?
So, you're saying it will produce no measurable magnet field? Isn't there some kind of table of values that show how certain materials react to an electric field? My idea is that since aluminum is an excellent conductor, electrons are able to easily flow through it. So wouldn't that mean...- eah2119

Undergrad Can a block of aluminum become an electromagnet?
So I have this huge solid cylinder of aluminum about a foot tall, and 2-3 inches in diameter. I understand that aluminum is not a permanent magnet. But it DOES conduct electricity. So, if I wrapped a conductor around it, and hooked that up to a power source, would the aluminum become an...- eah2119

How can I improve my understanding and grades in physics?
I didn't read through the whole thread, but if anyone is having trouble in physics, or any science or math in general, that's completely normal. Some people just aren't naturally good at grasping mathematical ideas. Often, these people are completely lost if there's just one little thing missing...- eah2119

Graduate Is the Universe Really Expanding?
Why not use the Earth as an analogy if the balloon is obviously too hard to understand? Let's say, for a moment, that the Earth is flat. We can easily find a good pic of this on google. http://go.hrw.com/atlas/norm_map/world.gif That is the surface of the Earth (a sphere) unrolled so that it is... -

Graduate Origin of Universe - Hole with no bottom?
No, I have no source. It's just a pure idea coming from me. But I would definitely like to see the basis for your information. Does it come from the universal background radiation? The only education I have is high school physics so don't expect that anything I'm saying is true or backed by... -

Graduate Origin of Universe - Hole with no bottom?
I still don't see the point in considering their are multiple universes and each universe is created from another. Even if there is a mother universe, it would go back to the same problem we faced earlier: how or from what was our universe created? I still continue to hold that there is only... -

Graduate Is the Universe Really Expanding?
So, is our observable universe shrinking? I've always thought that our observable universe is expanding because every day more and more light is reaching us. As a result, more and more distant galaxies are being revealed. But when I think about it, considering the constantly acceleration... -

Learning to Live and Living to Learn
To be human is to learn, to teach, to laugh, to cry, to live, to die, to love, to hate, to succeed, to fail, to cooperate, to compete, and to be who all of us are. Joe is a farmer. Sally is a doctor. Joe is promiscuous. Sally is intellectual. Together, they are human. Apart, they are...- eah2119

High School How would you steer a spacecraft?
What's the fuel used for the short spurts of propulsion? Whenever I see videos of the shuttle making its was to the ISS, I always see short and small bursts coming from the craft in different directions. I realize that they are controlling the exact position of the craft, but what is the fuel...- eah2119

Online Physics Games & Simulations
http://www.hemispheregames.com/osmos/ It's available for iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, and Linux. It's $10, but it really is entertaining. If you're knowledgeable about orbits and how they react, it has a relation to physics. The basic idea behind the game is the laws of motion. You are...- eah2119

Graduate Does the Universe Rotate and Does it Have an Axis?
I just wanted to point out that if you are suggesting that the universe is rotating, it must have an axis to rotate on, and thus a center. If the universe has a center, it is spherical in shape and also has a definite size (mass). I recollect that a post earlier in this thread argued that the... -

Undergrad Using Magnets to Create Perpetual Motion?
That's misleading. Knowing the definition of perpetual and the the definition of motion separately, and then combining them creates the definition: continues to move. Somebody want to coin another term? I wasn't thinking. Newton's first law proves it! Obviously anything will continue to move...- eah2119

Undergrad Using Magnets to Create Perpetual Motion?
Let's say I have permanent magnets set up in a sort of half sphere with the inside of the sphere pointing up and it laying flat on a table and then I have a ball with, let's say, half the radius of the half sphere. The ball has the same permanent charge as the half sphere. I place the ball over...- eah2119
