    Why use inverter and not correct ac source to ac drive directly?

    Hi all, I have a question with regards to why should we use an ac-dc, dc -dc, dc-ac converter to an ac drive? Why not connect an ac source through a transformer directly to the ac drive? Isn't it the same? What equations can prove that the use of converter is a better choice?
