Is it really just practice or is there another way, like completely changing my thinking? What is it that makes some people good at math and others not?

The title says it all. I've always been pretty bad at math. Never took anything beyond precal and statistics, and I did terribly in those two classes, but I didn't try very hard either. I rarely studied, except maybe the night before a test. What can I do to get better at math?
