Parallel Tangents to Cubic Graph
Homework Statement I have the graph of a function f(x)=(x+1)(x+4)(x+6). I've found the tangent at x=-6, the equation of which is y=10x+60. I then need to algebraically find the equation of another tangent on the curve which is parallel to the first. Homework Equations No idea. The Attempt at...- flyinghigh

Superposition of cosine functions for tides
1.805 is the amplitude of the waves, as in the average difference between the high tide and the low tide. 2pi/12.165x is the period of the tide, as in how frequently it occurs. 3.125 is the average water height and hence the vertical phase shift of the function. So then I need another function...- flyinghigh

Superposition of cosine functions for tides
Well then what area of the data? Since I already have the first function that takes into account the tide heights and occurrence, what else is required? That's why I asked if it was based on the moon's orbit etc.- flyinghigh

Superposition of cosine functions for tides
Sorry, should of explained that to find a more accurate representation of the tide, you use the sum of two cosine functions, which is also known as superposition. So yeah, the tide is represented by y1+y2, where y1=the above function, y2=??...- flyinghigh

Superposition of cosine functions for tides
Homework Statement I have 1.805cos(2pi / 12.165x) +3.125 as the function of tidal data. However I need to use another function, superimpose, to more accurately graph the data for the tides. And yeah I'm pretty lost... Does the next function have to be something to do wit the moon and its...- flyinghigh

Cosine function & Modelling Tides
Thanks for the clarification physicsnoob93. So, taking what you said into account, the function would be y=1.805cos(2\pi/5x-??)+3.125 Is that on the way to being correct? I'm just not sure what C should be...? flyinghigh- flyinghigh

Cosine function & Modelling Tides
I'm having a bit of trouble working out the cosine function for the data I have on tide charts. Homework Statement I need to put the data provided into the cosine function y=acos(nx-b)+c Morning average high tide: 5.137 metres Morning average low tide: 1.29 metres Afternoon average high...- flyinghigh
