How possible is it to get a tenure track position at a top 30 or above university in physics? I know that getting any tenure-track position is hard in itself, but I'm also wondering about a specific rumor I heard a bunch of times that "you can only end up being a professor at a school lower than...
@PeanutButterPuffin Thought I was going to have an REU buddy in this thread, but turns out you're in MRSEC!
In any case, summer in NYC is going to be awesome.
Thanks for the replies. I agree that the experience is what's important. I'm thankful that I have opportunities to get some experience, but at the same time, I feel like I could possibly switch to a field that's a better fit now rather than later.
@jtbell The thing is, I would rather not plan...
Hi there,
I'm a junior in undergrad, and so far I've had a summer of research experience at an REU, just started research at my current school in December, and am doing another REU this summer. I'm a transfer student and at my previous school there were literally no research opportunities...
I didn't see it mentioned, so I'd like to say that there are a couple of NSF funded REUs in accelerator physics. If you get an offer, it can be a great way of trying out research in the field during undergrad!
The Cornell CLASSE REU (an offer I personally received, which made me look up...
Haven't heard back from a couple yet (including SULIs). But so far:
Cornell CLASSE (accelerator physics) - acceptance (12 positions, 215 applicants)
UCLA (plasma physics) - rejection (12 positions, >400 applicants)
LIGO - acceptance at Washington site (declined)
Nevis Labs - acceptance...
I heard back, once with a request for more info (I didn't get the position) and once with an offer at the Washington site. I declined, though.
I think everyone will hear back by March 15, according to their site.
Perhaps Computational Physics by Newman could serve as a helpful resource:

Some of the book is offered for free online here:

If you're already comfortable programming, you can...
Having UK unis as a backup makes more sense. Since you should have that covered, then yes, you can just apply for selective reaches in the U.S.
IMO, HMC is as good a choice as any of the others if you plan on pursuing a PhD. I think it is still pretty selective though.
Since you say you...
I guess I'll be the one to say that there are many other great schools for physics in the U.S. apart from HPSMC. Especially at the undergraduate level, where the material will roughly be the same everywhere. What will make the difference for admissions to top-notch graduate programs is access to...
I never took physics in high school. I went to an arts magnet school and they didn't offer AP Physics when I was there (they actually introduced it the year after I graduated).
My only options at the time were regular physics and honors physics. I believe the latter was only offered online...
I applied to MSU but haven't heard back. Got rejected from UC Davis and UC Merced.
Accepted to UNC's MIRT REU for a project about nanoscale optics. Taking it.
I didn't apply to very many since I was working on transfer applications all semester. I somehow missed a lot of deadlines. Was also...
