But okay, at the lowest possible speed, if you go around the stator, the magnetic phases follow an A-B-C-A-B-C pattern. At a faster speed, they could be A-A-B-B-C-C, and then A-A-A-B-B-B-C-C-C. With 48 poles, the A-A-A-B-B-B doesn't work, as 48 doesn't divide by 9. That allows for speed...- gah

In addition to the choice of speeds, it is usual to use wye-delta starting for large induction motors. That is, to start with windings wired as wye, with the voltage (and current) reduced by a factor of sqrt(3). But maybe that doesn't matter for this part of the question.- gah
