Graduate Why does bringing N 1-orbital atoms together yield N levels?

Yeah, I suppose I'm unclear about what defines a state in this context. If I assume all of the electrons remain in the 1s state, while sort of forming a metal, then I have more electrons than available states. So, the creation of more states solves this problem, but isn't obviously the answer...

Graduate Why does bringing N 1-orbital atoms together yield N levels?

A common example of this is that when bringing N hydrogen atoms together into a ring. Far apart, assume each electron exists in the 1s state. As we bring them together, instead of each electron staying at the original 1s level, or all of them changing by the same amount, the 1s level fans out...

Undergrad Gas flow from one chamber to another

Ok, so let's say I know the details of the valves, tubes, etc. I'm not sure if the flow is adiabatic (I'm not putting in any heat, the experiment is done at room temperature). If there is cooling/heating upon expansion, then heat could transfer in through the metal chamber. Any ideas how I...

Undergrad Gas flow from one chamber to another

Hi, I don't know a ton of fluid mechanics, and haven't been able to mathematically define this problem, so I was hoping someone might have an idea. The problem I want to solve is the time it takes for gas to flow from one chamber (with finite pressure) to another (vacuum). The problem is...

Graduate What is the significance of the contact potential in metal-metal interfaces?

For starters, can you limit these theories to the metal-metal case? Maybe make the gap go to zero? Definitely you expect impedance from the differing crystal structures and gap between the materials (although it may be microscopic).

Undergrad Sound wave vs light wave speed

An interesting point to make with regards to this is that for a sound wave to propagate, there is a medium that must permit the energy to flow through it. With regards to elasticity, intuition would suggest that it is reasonable for sound to travel faster in a less elastic medium. When a ball...

Undergrad Gravitional Force On Composite Body

If the body is modeled such that the acceleration felt by each particle is the same, then Ʃmiai= M Ʃ mi / M ai = M d2/ dt2 Ʃ mi/M xi = M acm = M g M is the total mass and Ʃ mi/M xi is by definition the center of mass. Assuming they all feel the same field, the result follows. A case...
