High School Correlation vs Causation: What Can Be Inferred?
If variable X is positively correlated with variable Y, under what circumstances am I allowed to infer that X does not causally prevent Y with reasonable probability? I don't know much about statistics and I'm trying to motivate myself to learn by doing. For example...- gl0Wyrm

Undergrad Alice Sees Sudden Acceleration at Event Horizon
I was hoping for a popularization with technical details, but I suppose I could try and go through the paper on that website. How has the scientific community responded to this research?- gl0Wyrm

Undergrad Alice Sees Sudden Acceleration at Event Horizon
I took everything Leonard Susskind said in this lecture in the literal sense: Could you recommend a book or some other source that goes into it in more detail?- gl0Wyrm

Undergrad Alice Sees Sudden Acceleration at Event Horizon
As I understand it, to Bob, the event horizon appears extremely hot. To Alice in free fall, nothing seemed out of the ordinary as she neared it. When she experiences acceleration, does the area close to the event horizon suddenly become extremely hot? (Possibly as a consequence of the...- gl0Wyrm

Undergrad Alice Sees Sudden Acceleration at Event Horizon
Scenario 1: Alice drops into the event horizon at free fall and notices nothing as she crosses it. Bob looks on from the outside and sees her flattened against the event horizon. Scenario 2: Alice drops into the event horizon from the outside and notices nothing. But as she nears it, she...- gl0Wyrm

I've been staring at these definitions for a while now
hold on, it's really easy to confuse these definitions of "simple". i'll try and reiterate my concern. let's see if I've made a mistake somewhere: true, reductionism isn't primarily about parsimony in terms of information content, (occam's razor) but focuses on explaining complex behaviors...- gl0Wyrm

I've been staring at these definitions for a while now
what is the nature of the relationship, if any, between the two? if parsimony is simplicity in explanation and reductionism is simplicity of mechanism, then is reductionism externally projected parsimony?- gl0Wyrm

Graduate How Are Electrons Formed from Gamma Radiation?
Electrons can be created from gamma radiation, right? What if any, are the intermediate stages to the formation of an electron particle from energy? Thanks.- gl0Wyrm
