CERN's OPERA Experiment: Measuring Faster-Than-Light Speed

I have been reading and I think I understand what they were doing in CERN (OPERA) when they measured a speed faster than light. But I am not sure so I would like to ask you if I understand this right. As I understand it they "shot" two microwaves. The first one went straight to a "goal" but...

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

Hei I see what you mean phinds, but that is not the case. The space has no size, if it had it then the only thing that matters is that it is "larger" after each "moment" (not the best way to say it but I think you know what I mean). So the "size" of space is not important, just that it is...

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

I think you understand what I mean now. Thanks for the patience. I do not know all the right words to use. But I knew before I asked I could not mention GRA... and I am not going to. I will be banned if I do. I read what I could find on the expansion of the universe and its effect (lack of...

A woman has a large stone in her yard. She lives at the equator and

Well Dave I do not doubt you. I will have to go back to the drawing board :) I am a family man and there is not always a free quality time for physics available. But I will use the time I have to "play" the next week or so to "digest" this, and looking forward to. I might pop up later with...

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

Thank You L sos What I am trying to imagine is not exactly a balloon loosing air from one point and there for spinning around. It is more of a scenario of theoretical situation where I am trying to imagine this: A steel ball is positioned in vacuum. Space is "growing" or "increasing" all...

A woman has a large stone in her yard. She lives at the equator and

You are probably much better at this then I am and I am not going to argue. But as I see it gravity "pulls" not just what it "sees", it "pulls" the whole thing. Front, center and the behind. As I see it the tides are because of the Earth is spinning and there for liquid matter as water flows...

I think it will always weight the same, no matter what other gravity comes along. If the Moon, the Sun or anything else is pulling the rock it is also pulling the Earth,(and the Earth "it") in same direction.

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

Hei guys You might say I am playing with words, that is right. But I am trying to understand some very basic forces. I am trying to understand them logically but not mathematically. And with that I have only words. The definition of things with words is sometimes confusing. Using one word...

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

Thanks Doc Al, I appreciate it I will try one more time with a statement: A balloon that is collapsing is “falling” 3 dimentionally. Could this be true in your opinion? Thanks again Best regards halli

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

Thanks again Doc Al Why? Not easy to answer. The first question maybe should have been: Do you think it is possible for objects to "fall" three dimensionally (at least in theory)? But I needed to try to explain it somehow. So is it obscure or maybe a possibility in your opinion?

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

Thanks for the reply phinds My trouble is that I have come to the conclusion that an object that falls straight down is falling two dimensionally, even though it is in a three dimensional world. It travels from point A straight to point B (no wind, resistance,....) If that conclusion is...

Answer: Basic Physics Question - Free Fall in 2D or 3D?

Can you help me out and tell me if I am right or wrong when I say the following: Think of a free fall. As we see something in a free fall here on Earth we are really seeing/experiencing it in 2d not 3d. An object that moves in a straight line from one point to another is traveling/falling...
