Graduate What Led Einstein to Connect Light and the Speed of C to E?
Hello All. Please forgive me if the answer to the following is found in PF but I didn't find it doing a search... My question is this: what prompted Einstein to even consider light or better C as integral to E or, well, 'everything'? Was it mathematical such that he had the E and m but not...- halpmaine

High School Conservation of Energy -- does it ever not apply?
I concur, NJrunner...why wouldn't this system play by the rules which are well established? Energy being destroyed feels wrong... and ominous on many levels; here's to hoping it's just a matter of needing a new way to measure! -
High School Conservation of Energy -- does it ever not apply?
Yah, definitely hard to conceptualize that! -
High School Conservation of Energy -- does it ever not apply?
Phinds, given what has been discussed here and on other threads to which have been alluded there seems to be a sentiment of E being 'cancelled out' when we move to the cosmos scale. Is this purely a mathematical 'result' or is it being suggested that E is not merely transferring form and... -
Graduate Expansion then Contraction....an infinite Elastic Collision?
Thanks Orodruin/All! I think I've been guilty of thinking of the Universe in terms of a closed, isolated system - albeit a NEARLY infinite one - to which the fundamentals would apply..?? I guess I was 'hoping' that while mathematically complex, the solution to the ultimate question would be... -
Graduate Expansion then Contraction....an infinite Elastic Collision?
Wouldn't the explanation that fits fundamental laws (e.g. Conservation of E) while making the least asumptions be an ongoing bang-crunch-bang...scenario? Why couldn't expansion be eventually reigned in by forces, dark matter and the like - ultimately leading to contraction? Why shouldn't... -

Is the Universe considered a closed system? -
High School Conservation of Energy -- does it ever not apply?
Are there closed systems to which conservation of E does not apply? -
High School Conservation of Energy -- does it ever not apply?
Are there situations when conservation of Energy does NOT apply? Thanks. -
Where Should I Post Questions About Fundamental Physics Laws?
Thank you, Greg. I have a relatively (sorry) simple (rhetorical) question. How or better where should I post/ask it? It pertains to fundamental laws of physics... -Andrew (halpmaine)- halpmaine
